Odd. Most of the founders of modern science seem to have St. appended before their name, or S.J., O.P, or O.F.M. appended afterwards. They had the idea that the cosmos was well-ordered, rational, and mathematical, and so observational science was possible in principle.
I suppose it matters whether you consider science to be a means of finding the truth or rather a means of empowerment.
